Lesson 15: The Khmers
Cambodia has a total of 11 million people. The majority of Khmer people are farmers who live in villages in the countryside. Over there, they grow various kinds of plants such as rice and vegetables. Khmer people make their own tools and equipment such as baskets, towels, and fishing equipment.
The majority of houses in the rural areas are built on stilts. This kind of construction helps to prevent the houses from flooding and also creates space for sheltering animals and for storing agricultural tools. Moreover, this kind of construction also allows a breeze to move through the house.
