She was a Wednesday-born child, and "Shwe" was Wednesday nan. As for "Zin", that was Tuesday nan, and she did not know why her parents had chosen it. But this did not trouble her. At least she had the "Shwe", and that alone, she thought, was probably sufficient nan for any one person. In fact, considering all the good fortune in her life, she was sure of it. For one thing, she hadn't failed a single exam from the time she had first entered primary school until she completed her university degree. After that, her success as a student led to a teaching job, and she became " Lecturer Daw Shwe Zin," a little that had, she felt, a thoroughly splendid ring to it.

Being active and strong in youth, she had ridden the bus to school from the time she was a kinder until she became a lecturer. She had never known how rich (or not) her parents were. Her mother was very frugal and took care not to let her children become aware of what they did and did not have. Unlike Shwe Zin and her brothers and sisters, who all rode the bus to school, their father drove himself to work in an Austin A40. Her father's generation, you see, had grown up in a luxurious time when people own their cars. A lube job and wash once a month at the Inzine Car Company cost only 50 kyats, and whatever parts might be needed for repairs were sure to be factory fresh and honestly priced. She could still remember how smoothly the car ran when her father brought it home from the shop . . .

And since she had no children to raise, she had long nurtured the secret desire of someday owning a better car than her father's.

But she was impressed that her mother had somehow found the means to purchase and keep the plots of land, and that she had done so without letting on to anyone about it. She was never more impressed later when their mother's jewelry was divided between her and the other sister. There was more of it than she had ever expected, and she fully realized then how shrewd and frugal a business women their mother was.

By selling some of her gold to augment her cash savings, she had been able to buy the car she had always wanted. At the time, a new Lancer fresh off the boat cost 300,000 kyats. Then she got her nephew to the driver. He was given his meals, a monthly salary of 300 kyats, and a room in the servants' quarters at the back of the house. The car's name "Lancer," was Wednesday nan. Not only that, but she also liked the color, a pleasing dark blue. Their house was in Mayangone, and each month when her mother want to visit the Shwe Dagon pagoda, Daw Shwe Zin sent her in the car.

Her worries came instead whenever they entered a parking lot. She would have nervous fits lest the paint job get scratched or a fender dented.
	"ဖြည်းဖြည်းမောင်းနော်ရာမ ကားတိုက်မိမယ်" ကားစီးချိန်မှာလည်း သူ့ကားကို အတိုက်ခံရမှာ စိုးရိမ်သည်၊၊	Drive slowly, Ya Ma, or you will hit somebody, she once fussed.
	"အန်တီဇင်ရဲ့ကားရှင်းတဲ့အခါ မြန်မြန်မောင်းလို့ ရပါတယ်၊၊ အမေရိကမှာဆိုရင် မြန်သင့်ရက်နဲ့ မြန်မြန်မမောင်းရင် အဖမ်းခံရတယ်"	"Auntie Zin, it's ok to drive fast when there's no traffic. In America, if you drive slow where you're supposed to drive fast, they'll arrest you."
	တူတော်မောင်က ဘယ်တုန်းကရရှိသော ဗဟုသုတနှင့်လည်းမသိ သူ့ကိုပြောပြသည်၊၊	She recalled wondering where he had learned such things.

"Yes, well that's America, not here!" she scolded him, and he became silent. Ya Ma's name was Wednesday nan, and that explained his obedience to her. It also explained their good fortune: in all the time he had been her driver the car had suffered not the slightest mishap. Still, no matter how careful he was, the other cars all went so fast and cut so close that even the sound of the wind as they passed was frightening. If any of them should happen to veer into her car . . . .
	"စိတ်မောစရာ ကောင်းလိုက်တာ မေမေရာ၊ လမ်းမှာ ဘတ်စ်ကားတွေ၊ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ကားတွေ ကျပ်ညပ်နေတာပဲ၊၊ တချို့ နေရာတွေကျတော့လည်း ချယ်ဂါလီ၊ စက်ဘီး၊ ဆိုက်ကား၊ လူတွေ အမလေး ရှောင်လိုက်ရတာ၊ လူတွေက ကားလာနေတာကို နဲနဲမှမမှုဘူး၊၊ သေရမှာ မကြောက်သလိုပဲ၊၊ လမ်းစည်းကမ်းကို မရိုသေဘူး၊၊"	" It such a worry, mother," she had finally confessed one day. "The streets are so crowded with buses and cars. Then you have to look for the push carts, the bicycles, the Pedi cabs . . . and the pedestrians! Oh! they're the worst! they totally ignore the traffic laws and pay no mind what so ever to passing vehicles. It's like they have no fear of death!"

	"ဇိမ်ခံချင်လို့ ကားစီးတာမေမေရ၊၊ သမီးတို့အနေနဲ့ ကားနဲ့သွားပြီး အချိန်မီလုပ်စရာ ဘာမှ မရှိတော့ဘူးမို့လား"	"When I bought the car, we were going out more and it was convenient for us to have it. But we don't need it anymore, do we?"
	"အေး ဟုတ်သားပဲ၊ ဒီလိုဆို ကားကိုရောင်းလိုက်ပါလား"	"No, we don't. Does this mean you want to sell it?"
	"ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ကိုယ့်ကားမှာ ဘာမှ အနာအဆာမရှိခင် ရောင်းလိုက်တာ ကောင်းပါတယ်၊၊ ညွှန်ချုပ်ဦးသာဆန်းကား ဝင်တိုက်ခံလိုက်ရတာ ခေါင်းကျေသွားတာပဲ၊၊ သူ့ခမျာ ငွေချေပြီးစ ရှိသေးတယ်"	"Yes--and I think it would be best to get rid of it while there are still no scratches or dents. Director General U Tha San's car was in an accident, you know. The front end was smashed in. Poor man, he'd just finished paying for it"

Whenever she was in the car with Ya Ma, she had to watch him to make sure he didn't do something wrong. It was exhausting. "Heh! Don't go in there! It's one-way street!" or "Don't park in the spots with the red stripes!" She could tell she irritated him, but it couldn't be helped. The fine for traffic violations was a thousand kyat. Wherever they went, she always had to remember to take along thousand kyat just in case . . . .

Owning a car just wasn't worth all the hassle involved. From the moment you pulled out of the drive way you were constantly craning your neck to one side or another. Are there any oncoming cars? . . . If we go beyond the yellow line with the light still red, will we get arrested? . . . Her car had become nothing but a 300,000 kyat headache that she would be best rid of as soon as possible.
	"ရာမရေ အန်တီ့ကားကိုရောင်းလိုက်ရင် ကောင်းမလား"	One day she broached the subject to her nephew. "Ya Ma, how would it be if we sold the car?"
	"ကောင်းပါတယ်အန်တီ" ရာမက လျင်မြန်စွာ အဖြေပေးလိုက်သည်၊၊ သူလည်း နားအေးရတော့မည် မဟုတ်ပါလား၊၊ ဟုတ်သည်၊ ဒေါ်ရွှေဇင်က ရင်ပူသည်၊၊ သူ့မှာလည်း နားပူရသည်၊၊	"Okay, Auntie." So! It had been easier than she'd thought it would be. In fact, she had been slightly irked that Ya Ma had assented so readily. He was thinking, no doubt, that he too would finally get some peace of mind if the car were sold. While she suffered anxiety attacks, he had been getting an earful of her nagging. It had not been easy for either of them.

From Mayangone, she took the Mingladon bus to downtown Rangoon. She could take a city-circular bus from the World Peace Pagoda. The buses were more crowded now than before, however. Then too, she herself had grown quite fat since she was younger, so that she could not easily tolerate the press of people. Still, since there was no other choice, she took the bus when she had to and exercised her patience as best she could.

"Renault" started with the letter "ya." That was Wednesday nan--good luck for Wednesday-borns. As it turned out, however, it was not so lucky as all that. They made one stop after another, and the bus became even more tightly packed than usual with standing passengers.
	"ခင်ဗျားတို့ လူ,လူချင်း ငဲ့ညှာတဲ့စိတ် မရှိဘူးလားဗျ၊၊ ဒါလောက်မှ နေရာလေး မပေးနိုင်ဘူးလား"	"Don't you people have any consideration for others? Come on! Make room! Make room!"
	ကိုရွှေစပယ်ယာက ဗြဟ္မစိုရ်တရားကို ဟောလိုက်သောအခါ ခရီးသည်များသည် နာခံသောအားဖြင့် ကျောချင်းကပ် ရင်ချင်းအပ်ကုန်ကြ၏၊၊	The gem of a conductor squealed like this each time new passengers got on, and if people were slow to respond, he would start reciting the four cardinal virtue of love, sympathy, and so on. At that, everyone would crowd still closer together, back to back and chest to chest.one person's chest tight against the back of the person in front.

From experience Daw Shwe Zin knew the best way to position her body at such times. The stop where she always got on was mid-way along the route, and there were never empty seats. So now at usual she grasped the overhead handrail with one hand, then planted her feet about a foot apart from each other, to brace herself should the bus happen to sway.

As a teacher, she had often told her pupil about the balance of power among nations in both the East and the West, and about how each nation carefully positions itself so as to ensure that the scales remain level. This same principle could, she mused, be applied to riding a bus. She had to distribute her weight evenly on her feet so as not to fall should the bus come to a sudden stop. If it turn or slow down, she had to let her knees give. If it lurched ahead, she had to let her body lean slightly to the rear. Oh . . . the lessons one doesn't learn in school.
	စပယ်ယာ၏ တစာစာအော်သံကို သူကြားလာပြန်သည်၊၊ လမ်းဘေးမှတ်တိုင်များတွင် ရပ်နေသော ခရီးသည်များကို ငဲ့ညှာသနားသော စပယ်ယာသည် အော်ကာဟစ်ကာနှင့် ကားပေါ်သို့ အကုန်ဆွဲတင်ရှာသည်၊၊ ကြင်နာလိုက်သည့်ဖြစ်ချင်း၊ မဟာကရုဏာရှင်ပါပေတည်း၊၊	She heard again the strident voice of the conductor. In his great mercy he had stopped the bus so that more people could get on. After all, sympathizing with others was one of the great virtues, was is not? The conductor was screaming helping all the people onto the bus.
	ဒေါ်ရွှေဇင်သည် ဘာလုပ်ရမည်မသိ အသက်က ရှုလို့မရ၊၊ ခေါင်းပေါ်ကတန်းကို တင်းတင်းကျပ်ကျပ် ကိုင်ထား၏၊၊	The crowding got worse, and Daw Shwe Zin didn't know what to do. She was holding firmly to the hand rail, but she could hardly breath.
	"ဆူးလေ မြို့ ထဲကိုလာလေ အတွင်းဝင်ကြလေ" စပယ်ယာ၏အသံမဆုံးခင် ... "ဟေ့အထဲမှာ ညပ်နေပြီကွ" ယောက်ျားတသံက ပေါ်လာသည်၊၊	"We are going to Sule, downtown. Come on. Get inside." The conductor announcement was interrupted by a man's voice: "Hey! We are jam-packed in here!"
	"ချောင်ချောင်စီးချင်ရင် ကိုယ်ပိုင်ကားဝယ်စီးဗျို့၊ သွားနိုင်ပြီဆရာ" စပယ်ယာ၏ အောင်မြင်သောအသံက တကားလုံးကို လွှမ်းသွားသည်၊၊	"If you want spaciousness, buy a car," the conductor retorted. Then, to the driver, "Okay, Boss, Roll!"
	ကမ္ဘာအေးလမ်းပေါ် မှတ်တိုင်တခုတွင် ဆင်းဖို့ ဒေါ်ရွှေဇင်သည် ရှေ့ပေါက်ကို ကြိုးစား၍သွားနေတုန်း ကားကြီးသည် မှတ်တိုင်မှာ အရှိန်နှင့်ထိုးရပ်လိုက်၏၊၊ တကားလုံးလိုလို လဲပြိုသံတွေနှင့် ဘာဖြစ်ကုန်သည်မသိ၊ သူက သံတန်းကို ကိုင်ထားသော လက်ကိုလွှတ်၍ ခုံတန်းပေါ်ကလူပေါ် ဖင်ထိုင်လျက်ကျသွားသည်၊၊ ရှက်အားနှင့် ကမန်းကတန်းထ၍ "ကျမ ရှင့်အပေါ် လဲကျသွားတာ ခွင့်လွှတ်ပါရှင်" သူတောင်းပန်သော စကားမဆုံးခင် ....	Somewhere along World Peace Road the bus stopped abruptly just as Ma Shwe Zin was moving towards the front to get off. There were loud, frightening noises, as if the bus was going to tip over. In her confusion, she lost her grip on the overhead handrail and accidentally sat down on top of a seated passenger. She stood up again immediately. "Oh! I'm so sorry! Please excuse me! I didn't mean--" Before she could finish, the conductor's voice rang out again:
	"ဘာစကားရှည်နေတာလဲ အဖွားကြီး ဆင်းမှာမြန်မြန်ဆင်း" မဟာသာကီနွယ်ဖြစ်သော စပယ်ယာက ယဉ်ကျေးသော မြန်မာထုံးတမ်းနှင့်အညီ သူ့ကို မောင်းချလိုက်သောအခါ သူသည် ကတုန်ကယင်နှင့် ပလက်ဖောင်းပေါ် ပြေးဆင်းလိုက်ရသည်၊၊	"The lady at the front! If you are getting off the bus, stop jabbering and get off!" And with that he quite literally drove her from the bus. She hurried down to the platform, trembling, and
	ဝူးကနဲ မောင်းထွက်သွားသော ကားကြီးကို လှမ်းကြည့်ရင်း သက်ပြင်းချလိုက်၏၊၊ ရင်ထဲမှာ ရင်ခုန်သံပြင်းထန် နေသေး၍ သူခဏနားနေသည်၊၊ မိုးတွေကအုံ့လာသည်၊၊ သူသွားရမည့်လမ်းမှာ မနေ့ကရွာချထားသော မိုးရေတွေတင်နေသည့် ရေဗွက်ရေအိုင်တွေ ပျံ့ကြဲနေသည်၊၊ မိုးမရွာခင် သူ လမ်းဘေးမှ ခပ်သုတ်သုတ်ကလေး ဆက်လျှောက်သွားသည်၊၊ ကားတစီးက ဖြတ်လိုက်စဉ် အော်ပြောသွား၏၊၊	the bus departed with a roar. Shwe Zin sighed as she watched it go. Her heart was still pounding in her chest, so she stopped to rest. There were still scattered puddles from the rain the day before, but the sky was threatening rain again. Hoping to escape a drenching, she started walking quickly away from the road. A man in a passing car shouted at her:
	"သေရမှာမကြောက်ဘူးလား" ဘုရား....ဘုရား၊ ဘာပြောသွားပါလိမ့် ပြောရက်လိုက်တာ၊ ပြောရက်တာထက် ကားဘီးက သူ့ဘေးကရေအိုင်ကို အရှိန်နှင့်ဖြတ်လိုက်တော့ သူ့ကိုယ်မှာ ရွှံ့ဗွက်တွေ ရစရာမရှိ၊ ကားဘီးမှစင်လာသည်၊၊	"Hey! you're going to get killed if you don't watched out!" What was that? My God! How could anyone be so rude! The impudence of that guy! She could hardly believe what she had heard. And as if to add insult to injury, the tires of the car had through a puddle and splashed her with mud. She was furious.
	သူ ပြီးတော့ ချက်ချင်း သတိရသည်၊ သူ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ကားပေါ်မှာ နေခဲ့စဉ်က "လမ်းဘေးကလူတွေ" အပေါ် သူ့အမြင်သည် ယခုလိုပါပဲ "လူတွေက ကားကိုနဲနဲလေးမှမမှု၊ သေရမှာ မကြောက်" ဟုသူထင်ခဲ့သည်၊၊ ယခုတော့ သူ လမ်းပေါ်ကလူ ဖြစ်လာပြီ၊ လမ်းပေါ်က အမြင်မှာတော့ ကားတွေ အမောင်းကြမ်းသည်၊၊ ဒီလိုပါပဲလေ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ကားပေါ်ကလူအမြင်နှင့် လမ်းပေါ်ကလူအမြင် အခြေအနေအရ ဘယ်လိုမှ တူညီနိုင်မည်မဟုတ်၊၊	A moment later, however, she caught herself up short. She too had once regarded pedestrians in the same way . They totally ignore the traffic laws, pay no mind whatsoever to passing vehicles. It's like they have no fear of death! The words rang in her mind. Now that she was a pedestrian herself, she saw things differently. It seemed to her now that the cars careening down the road were in the grips of some crazy, violent force, something almost demoniacal. They would never understand each other, she thought. Drivers and pedestrians. They would never be able to see things as the other did.
	ဒေါ်ရွှေဇင် ဘတ်စ်ကားမစီးတော့၊၊ တော်ပြီ၊ လုပ်စရာရှိသည်များကို စုပေါင်းလိုက်သည်၊၊ သားအမိနှစ်ယောက်တွက် လစဉ် ငြုတ်၊ ကြက်သွန် စသည့် မီးဖိုအသုံးအဆောင် တလစာဝယ်ရမည်၊၊ မေမေ့အတွက် ဆေးဝါးဝယ်ရမည်၊၊ ဒါတွေကို တရက်သတ်မှတ်၍ စုပေါင်းလုပ်လိုက်မည်၊၊ ဒီအတွက် လေးဘီးကား ငှားစီးမည်၊၊ အလွန်ဆုံးကုန်(၂၀၀)ကျပ်ပဲပေါ့၊၊	Daw Shwe Zin decided not to ride the bus after that. She simply refused to risk experiencing again the discomfort and humiliation of her last trip. She decided she would just let her various errands pile up so that they could be dispatched all at once with the least effort. Shopping for chili peppers onions and other kitchen necessities, buying medications for her mother--she would set aside one day each month to do all these things together, and for this would rent a lei bein car. That would only cost about 200 kyat.
	ဟုတ်သည်၊၊ လေးဘီးပဲ စီးတော့မည်၊ လေးဘီးဆိုသည်မှာ "လေး" ကစတော့ဗုဒ္ဓဟူးနံပဲ၊ သူ့ကို အကျိုးပေးမှာပါ၊၊	Yes, of course! That was it! The "lei" of lei bein began with the letter "la," and that was Wednesday nan! In the moment, all doubts were dispelled.
	မေမေကတော့ သာရေးနာရေး ကိစ္စလေးတွေရှိသေးသည် ဟုပြောသည်၊၊ ဟုတ်ပေသား၊၊ ဒါပေမင့် သာရေးနာရေးဆိုတာ နေ့စဉ်ဖြစ်နေသည့် အလုပ်မှမဟုတ်ပဲ၊၊ ဒီတော့လည်း ဖြစ်လာလျှင် လေးဘီးပဲစီးမည်ဟု သူဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်သည်၊၊	Her mother reminded her that they would surely want to go out for social obligations at other times as well, and would need transportation. Her mother was right; but that would not be often, so Daw Shwe Zin figured they could rent a lei bein then, too.
	ဆုံးဖြတ်ပြီးမကြာခင် လုပ်ဖေါ်လုပ်ဖက် ဆရာတယောက် ဆုံးသွားသည်၊၊ မေမေအကြံဉာဏ်ပေးသည့်အတိုင်း လေးဘီးငှားစီးသွားသည်၊၊ ဆရာ့အိမ်က ကမ္ဘာအေးဘုရားရှေ့ မှာ ....	Not long after this, one of her former colleagues died, and her mother agreed that she should hire a lei bein to take her to the deceased person's house, which was somewhere at the front of the World Peace Pagoda.
	"ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဓါတ်ဆီ၂၀၀ဈေးဆိုတော့ မရမ်းကုန်းလမ်းဒေါင့်က ကမ္ဘာအေးကို ခြောက်ဆယ်တောင်းရတာပါ" ကားဒရိုင်ဘာက သူ့ကို ရှင်းလင်းပြသည်၊၊ ကမ္ဘာအေးဘုရားရှေ့ မောင်းရင်းမောင်းရင်းနှင့် သူ အိမ်ကိုမမှတ်မိ၊၊	"Gasoline is 200 kyats a gallon, so I'll have to charge you 60 kyats one way," the lei bein driver explain to her in a soft, polite voice. When they arrived at the World Peace Pagoda, however, she couldn't recall exactly where the house was.
	"နောက်ဘက်ပြန်လှည့်လိုက်ပါလားကွယ်။ ရှေ့မှာလမ်းဖြတ်ရှိပါတယ်" သူ့စိတ်ထဲမှာ သူသွားရမည့်အိမ် နောက်ကျန်ရစ်သည်ဟုထင်သည်၊၊	"Can we go back?" she asked, thinking they must have already gone too far. "there's an intersection up ahead."
	"ကျွန်တော်တို့က ရှေ့ကိုသာဆက်မောင်းတာ နောက်ပြန်မလှည့်ဘူးဗျ" ပထမ သူကားပေါ်တက်စ လေသံနှင့်မဟုတ်၊ ဒရိုင်ဘာက ခပ်မာမာပဲပြောသည်၊၊ သူဘာလုပ်ရပါ့မလဲ ဆက်သာမေါင်းလျှင် ဝေးသည်ထက်ဝေးမည်၊၊	"I'm not turning around here!" growled the driver. "We'll just have to keep going!" The gentle, polite whisper had somehow vanished. Shwe Zin didn't know what to do. If they keep on in the direction they were headed, she would be taken further and further from where she needed to go.
	"ဒီမှာပဲ အန်တီကိုထားခဲ့ပါတော့" ကားဒရိုင်ဘာက မျက်နှာထားတင်းတင်းနှင့် ကားကိုရပ်လိုက်သည်၊၊ သူ အိတ်ထဲမှ ငွေခြောက်ဆယ် ထုတ်ပေးလိုက်သည်၊၊ ပြီးတော့ ကမ္ဘာအေးဘုရားလမ်းမကြီးကိုကူးကာ ရှေ့ဘက် မျက်နှာချင်းဆိုင် ပလက်ဖေါင်းပေါ် လျှောက်လိုက်သည်၊၊	"Just let me off at the side of the road, then, she said finally. The driver, an angry grimace still on his face, stopped the car. She took 60 kyat from her bag and gave it to him, then crossed the World Peace Pagoda highway and walked along the sidewalk, her face fixed to the front.
	"ဘာစကားရှည်နေတာလဲ အဖွားကြီး ဆင်းမှာဆင်း" "ကျွန်တော်တို့က ရှေ့သာဆက်မောင်းတာ နောက်ပြန်မလှည့်ဘူး"	"The lady at the front! If you're going to get off, stop talking and get off! "I'm not going to turn around! We'll just have to go straight!
	ဘတ်စ်ကားစပယ်ယာနှင့် လေးဘီးဒရိုင်ဘာတို့၏ စကားများကို သူကြားယောင်လာသည်၊၊ သူတို့သည် လူသားတွေပဲ၊ "လူ" ဆိုတော့ ဗုဒ္ဓဟူးနံ၊ ဤလူသားသက်ရှိ ဗုဒ္ဓဟူးနံတွေကတော့ ဘာကြောင့် အကျိုးမပေးပါလိမ့်၊၊ ဗုဒ္ဓဟူးနံအပေါ် နဲနဲသံသယရှိလာသည်၊၊	She could still hear the words of the bus conductor and the lei bein driver. They were lu, and lu was Wednesday nan, so why hadn't they been of any help to her? For the first time in her life, she began to wonder if there was anything to do this nan business after all.
	ကိစ္စပြီး၍ အိမ်ပြန်ရောက်တော့ မောမောနှင့် မေမေရှေ့မှာ ထိုင်ချမိသည်၊၊ သူက လေးဘီးဒရိုင်ဘာအကြောင်း မေမေ့ကို ပြောပြ၏၊၊ သူ့စိတ်ကူးကိုလည်း ပြောပြမိသည်၊၊	At home, she dropped down wearily beside her mother and told what had happened with the lei bein driver. Then:
	"လင်ဆာမဟုတ်တောင် သင့်တော်မယ့်ကား တစီးစီး ဝယ်မှထင်တယ်မေမေ"	"I think I'll buy another car, Mother. One not as nice as the Lancer."
	မေမေကလည်း သူ့စကားကို စဉ်းစားနေ၏၊၊ ဘာပဲပြောပြော ဒေါ်ရွှေဇင်ဆိုသော သူ့သမီးကအသက်(၆၀)ကျော် သူကရှစ်ဆယ်၊ ကားလေးတစီးတော့ ရှိသင့်သည်၊၊ သူတို့မှာလည်း ကားဝယ်ရန် ငွေရှိသည်၊၊ ဒါပေမင့်	Her mother sat quietly for a moment, weighing the idea carefully in her mind. Her daughter was now over 60 years old; she herself was 80. Those two facts alone justified owing a car. But still . . .
	"ကားကတော့ ဝယ်သင့်ပါတယ်၊ ဘယ်သူမောင်းမလဲ၊ ရာမလိုလူက ရအုံးမှကိုး" ဟုမေမေကဆို၏၊၊	"Yes we need a car, but then who will drive it? Ya Ma isn't here, and I doubt you'll be able to find anyone else like him."
	ဟုတ်ပါ၏၊၊ ရာမသည် မိန်းကလေးတယောက်နှင့် လက်ထပ်ကာ အညာဘက်ကို ပြောင်းသွားသည်၊၊ တခြားလူတယောက်ဆိုတော့ ဓါတ်ဆီစိတ်မချရ၊ တနေ့တပုလင်း ခိုးထုတ်အုံးတော့ တပုလင်း၃၅ကျပ်၊ ပြီးတော့ ကားပစ္စည်းအသစ်နှင့်အဟာင်း လဲထည့်ပြန်လျှင်လည်း ... သူပင့်သက်ရှိုက်လိုက်သည်၊၊ ရာမလို လခ၃၀၀နှင့်လည်း မရတော့ပြီ၊ ဒရိုင်ဘာတယောက် ထမင်းကျွေး၊ နေစရာပေးတောင်မှ လခက၆၀၀၊၊ ငွေရေးကြေးရေးက ပြဿနာမဟုတ်၊ ကားမောင်းသူကို အိမ်ဖေါ်တန်းလျားမှာ ထားရမည်၊၊ သူတို့သားအမိနှင့် ထမင်းချက်အိမ်ဖေါ်ပဲရှိသော မိန်းမသားချည်းအိမ်မှာ ဒရိုင်ဘာက အပြင်လူနှင့်ပူးပေါင်း၍ မကောင်းကြံမှဖြင့်၊ ဒီအဖြစ်တွေ ကြားနေရသည်ပဲ၊၊ သေရသည်ဆိုသည်က မဆန်းပေမင့် အသတ်ခံရ၍ သွေးရူးသွေးတန်း နှင့်တော့မသေချင်၊၊	Her mother was right again. Ya Ma had married and gone to live in the north, and they couldn't be sure to trust another person with the gasoline. Even if it was just one bottle a day, that was 35 kyats. And what if the new driver took to stealing parts off the car and replacing them secretly with the old, second-hand ones? It happened. It could happen to them. Shwe Zin let out a sigh. She knew also that Ya Ma's 300 kyat salary was no longer enough, and meals and lodging for another person would cost at least 600 kyats per month. Still, money and food weren't the real problem. The real problem was that a driver would have to be given a room at the back of the house. They were only three women in the house--she, her mother, and the cook--and they had heard the stories of other people taking drivers into their homes only to have such things happen as would frighten anybody. She wasn't really afraid of dying, but didn't want to die like that.
	နှောင်းခဲ့ပြီဖြစ်သောအတိတ်၏ နောင်တတရားလိုလို သူ့ခေါင်းထဲဝင်လာသည်၊၊ ငယ်ငယ်က လူတယောက်ယောက်ကို သူလက်ထပ်ခဲ့ပါလျှင် ဒါကလဲ "လင်" ဆိုတာ ဗုဒ္ဓဟူးနံဆိုပေမင့် အကျိုးပေးအုံးမှကိုး၊၊ "လင်" ဆိုသူက ခုချိန် မကျန်းမမာ လဲနေပါပြီတဲ့၊ မရွှေဇင်၏ တတိယအရွယ်သည် အေးချမ်းစွာ ကုန်လွန်နိုင်မှာမဟုတ်၊၊ တော်ပြီလေ ဒါတွက် နောင်တတရားရစရာ မဟုတ်ပါပြီ၊၊ လက်ရှိ အခြေအနေနှင့်သာ ပြဿနာအရပ်ရပ်ကို ကြည့်ဖြေရှင်းသွားရမည်ပဲပေါ့၊၊	For a brief moment she reflected on something she had not done long ago. Had she married, she wondered, would the nan from "lin" have brought her good fortune? But what if her husband had become sickly? and her children all delinquents? There would have been no peace for then. Ach! Enough of that. It was no use thinking about might-have-been when more pressing problems were at hand.
	လောကကြီးမှာ အပြစ်ကင်းကင်းနှင့် သေရဖို့ကလည်း အရေးကြီးသည် မဟုတ်ပါလား၊၊ ဟုတ်၏၊၊ ဇနကမင်းသားကိုယ်တိုင်က ပြောခဲ့သည်ပဲ၊၊ မဏိမေခလာနှင့် ပင်လယ်ပြင်မှာ ကူးရင်းစကားဆိုခဲ့စဉ်က "သတ္တဝါတို့မှာ သေရသည်မှာ မထူးဆန်းပါ၊၊ သေခြင်း၏နောက်မှာ ကဲ့ရဲ့ ပြစ်တင်ခံရခြင်းမှ ကင်းဖို့လိုပါသည် နတ်သမီး" တဲ့၊၊	One thing was sure. One must die without guilt. Prince Janaka, shipwrecked miles from shore and swimming for his life, had said so himself to the earth spirit Manimekhala. "We needn't fear death," he had told her, "so long as we take no sin with us afterlife."
	ဟုတ်ပါ့။ ဘတ်စ်ကားစီးရင်း ဘတ်စ်ကားပေါ်က လိမ့်ကျ၊ လမ်းလျှောက်ရင်း ကားတိုက်ခံရ အဖြစ်တွေ ဖြစ်လာခဲ့ပါလျှင် မသေသေးခင် ဒဏ်ရာအနာတရ ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါလျှင် ဘယ်သူမှ သူ့ကို မသနား၊၊ "သိန်းချီ ချမ်းသာနေပါရက်နဲ့ ကားတစီးတောင်ဝယ်မစီးတာ သေတာကောင်းသည်" ဟူ၍ မှတ်ချက်ချကြမည်၊၊	The prince was right. If Shwe Zin fell from a bus or was hit buy a car and suffered injuries, people would sooner blame than pity her. She knew what they would say: "All those hundreds of thousands of kyats and too stingy to buy a car. She deserved to die." They would feel no sorrow, no compassion. Just hard-hearted censure.
	ကားဝယ်စီးပြန်တော့ကော၊၊ မေမေပြောသလို ကားမောင်းသူဒရိုင်ဘာက စိတ်မချရ၊၊ ဓါတ်ဆီခိုးရုံ ကားပစ္စည်းလဲရုံဆို ကိစ္စမဟုတ် အပြင်လူနှင့်ပေါင်းပြီး အိမ်ရှင်ကို သေကြောင်းကြံကြတဲ့ အကြောင်းတွေက ဒါလောက်ကြားနေပါရက်နဲ့ ကားဒရိုင်ဘာ ခေါ်ထားရမလား အပြစ်တင်ကြအုံးမည်၊၊	But what if she did buy a car? She would have to get a driver as well, and if anything bad happened from that she would be blamed for taking a stranger into the house despite having heard how dangerous it was.

May be they should move to her mother's plot of land in the village. They would have fewer social obligations there, they would have to leave the house less often. And they could trust the local peasants to help and protect them. They could take a hlei into town to buy necessities. No driver can steal gasoline from a hlei, or peddle parts from off it . . .
