Prefix Ter-


The prefix ter- is added to verb roots to form stative verbs. With a stative meaning-that is, roots that refer to the state of something or of a person, the prefix ter- forms a word that emphasizes the accidentally of the action by which the state came into being or that is has been possible for the state to have come into being. The following list gives stative forms that we have so far, which also occur prefixed by ter-:

bangun "be awake, get up" terbangun "be awakened by something that does not intend to awake"
biasa "be accustomed to" terbiasa "get accustomed to something by"
buka "open" terbuka "accidentally come open"
dapat "be in hand after having been obtained" terdapat "be available"
duduk "be seated" terduduk "fall into a sitting position"
ingat "remember" teringat "be reminded by something that does not intend to remind one"
masuk "enter, go inside" termasuk "be included in a group or accidentally get into something"
sedia "be ready" tersedia "be made available for use"
tidur "sleep" tertidur "fall asleep"
tutup "closed" tertutup "be locked"


EXAMPLES:

Dia duduk di depan.
He sat in the front.

Dia jatuh terduduk.
He fell into a sitting position.

Pedagang itu mandi setelah bangun.
The merchant took a bath after he woke up.

Dia terbangun karena ribut di luar kamarnya.
He was awakened by a noise outside of his room.
