  Vat That Luang was built on a knoll in 1818 by King Manthatourath, the monastery comprised a viharn and two large stupas.  The present viharn is in the style featuring a peripheral nave with three naves and nine bays.  Before 1975, Vat That Luang was the center for the cremation of the highest dignitaries of the royal family.
