Acknowledgements
Han Kuo-Huang, who earned his M.M. and Ph.D. Degrees from Northwestern University, is a professor of music and the principal teacher in the area of world music and world music education in the School of Music, Northern Illinois University. He has published widely in the field of ethnomusicology, including eight books, and he has toured extensively with the NIU Gamelan and Chinese Ensemble. In addition to teaching, he gives lectures and workshops throughout the country and in Taiwan and China. He is a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology (serving in the national council and as chair of the Midwest Chapter), Asian Music Society, Association for Chinese Music Research (serving as adviser) and Music Educators National Conference. He visits the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan frequently and established a gamelan program for that Institute. In 1983 he received the National Endowment for the Humanities award, in 1984 he received the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award and in 1998 he received the Presidential Teaching professorship at NIU.
