PRESIDENT Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that now is the right time to reshuffle his cabinet, after two years of its governance. “Not next year. At the latest at the end of this year, so that in January it will directly move at full speed,” said National Mandate Party Chairman, Soetrisno Bachir, quoting the President’s words, after meeting him at the Merdeka Palace on Friday two weeks ago.

October 20 will be the second anniversary of the Yudhoyono government. According to Bachir, the President once promised to evaluate his cabinet after two years.

A number of politicians immediately acquiesced to the President’s plan. “As long as the evaluation is objective,” said head of political affairs of the Justice & Prosperity Party, Untung Wahono. The Golkar Party was also supportive of a cabinet reshuffle. Theo L. Sambuaga, one of the chairmen of Golkar, confirmed that his party will request an additional ministerial spot.

But the idea of a reshuffle is not viewed positively by political observer from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Ikrar Nusa Bhakti. He considers any reshuffle of the cabinet would be a hindrance.

Respondents of a poll by Tempo are evenly split. One part agrees with the reshuffle, but the number of those opposing is also quite significant. Hasudungan H. is one who is certain that the President will reshuffle the cabinet. He accedes that some of the targets of the SBY-JK government have been reached, such as the stability of the rupiah. Yet there are several setbacks in other matters, such as on the several ministerial posts that do not give protection to the people, as in the Lapindo case. According to him, it will make big parties push for the necessity of a reshuffle.

Nevertheless, a respondent in Jakarta, Muhammad Taufik, has a different opinion. According to him, stability is required to guarantee development. “Reshuffling the cabinet
