Papaya is a common fruit in tropical countries. Its shape is long and oval, and the color of the skin is green before it is ripe. In its unripe stage, it is shredded and used in salads, such as the famous Thai dish called "som tam." The skin will turn yellowish green when it is ripe. The color of the Thai papaya's flesh is red or orange, and it is sweet in taste, unlike the smaller, less sweet, yellow-flesh papayas from Hawaii. Little black seeds can be found in the middle of the papaya's flesh. Thais will serve a plate of ripe papaya with lemon wedges to squeeze over the slices when eating them at table. The fruit is borne from the trunk, under the crown of large leaves at the top. Papaya contains an enzyme that is used to tenderize meats. It is an aid to digestion, but overeating can cause diarrhea in some people.
