Rambutan is one of the most famous tropical fruits because of its sweet taste, attractive color, and affordability. The size of a rambutan is similar to a golf ball. The skin of the rambutan is bright red in color, and the inner part of is white. It is eaten by piercing the shell-like skin with the thumbnail and pulling the upper half of the covering away so that the insides can be extracted. The skin of the rambutan has a somewhat hairy appearance, the "hairs" being green or yellow. In Thai it is called ngou, which is the same word used to refer to the negritos of Southern Thailand, tiny bands of indigenous Austronesian "Negritos" that are all but extinct, having been engulfed by Thai and Malay who settled the region much later historically.
