Beginning Translation Techniques in SEA Languages
(Indonesian, Tagalog & Thai). Fall 2004-Spring 2005.
The main purpose of this experimental course is familiarization with computer tools, such as concordancing and word frequency compilation software and online dictionaries to use in reading and translating a foreign language.
Texts: Hard copy of dictionary of language. Other texts and readings TBA/online.

Weekly Student Assignments
Vocabulary Building
1. Run word frequency program on text; copy ouput to Excel spread sheet; type in definitions of auto-selected words;
e-mail to instructor on weekly basis; continue to build vocabulary of ca. 300 new words
Use of Concordance
2. Instructor identifies words from WF list for students to:
research in a concordance -
a. student identifies multiple meanings;
b. student identifies parts of speech;
c. sub tasks: examples -
> Thai: abstract nouns; gerunds; classifiers; discontinuous constructions
> Indo/Tagalog: focus;
Weekly quiz
1. Use of Cloze test on weekly basis
2. Translate a couple of sentences on weekly basis
Mid-term
Instructor selects words from students 300 wd. list for in-class exam of 50 items.
Student is also given passage to translate in class.
Cloze test
Final
2 hr. translation using online tools and/or – but no notes.
Grade based on
1. Class participation and weekly assignments – 25%
3. Weekly quiz – 25%
4. Mid term – 25%
5. Final – 25%

* All students enrolled in the course will meet jointly at the first class meeting (TBA) to discuss the syllabus and answer questions. Thereafter, the language groups will meet separately at a location to be designated at the first joint meeting.
