Deputy Democrat leader Jurin Laksanavisit has voiced support for
concerned security and legal agencies' ruling against the idea to issue a
special law to handle unrest in three southern border provinces.
On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krue-ngarm announced after a
meeting of security officials and legal experts that the plan to issue an
executive security decree to quell southern violence was scrapped because
existing security-related laws like those covering detention of suspects
and telephone tapping were more than sufficient for the task.
Mr Jurin said the problems in the South did not stem from poor legal
enforcement but it was the government's improper policies that had led to
implementation mistakes and problem-solving failures.
Mr Jurin said the government was still not doing a good job in seeking
cooperation from all parties concerned in the South after the closure of
the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, saying more sincerity
and serious action was needed.
Meanwhile, a rubber sheet plant of Wadah Cooperatives Group in Yala's
Raman district was slightly damaged in an arson attack at 7pm yesterday.
Villagers helped put out the fire before firefighters arrived. A bomb-like
object was found affixed to a pillar in the plant. Bomb experts removed
the object.
