Scouts drafted for troop
drill
Pattani _ The armed forces have replaced boy and girl scout classes with basic
military training in the deep South out of concern that the scout uniform would
evoke attacks.
Soldiers now train youths in schools in the violence-hit provinces, including
Wat Suwannakorn school in Pattani's Khok Pho district.
The programme for 180 students is provided by the Prachin Buri-based 2nd
Infantry Regiment Royal Guards every Wednesday for three hours.
''Military training will make students strong and healthy, and offers
self-discipline,'' said school director Kasem Promsri.
Trainer Maj Apicha Khunsingh said the students learn how to form lines, turn
left and right and march in the same way troops do.
Students also learn about the military's role and responsibilities in
protecting the South.
