Attackers leave three dead, five wounded

Three men were killed and five others wounded in eight separate attacks in the three troubled provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat yesterday.

In Yala, a Buddhist villager was shot dead while motorcycling from his house to Bang Lang dam in Bannang Sata district.

Police said Wiroj Jongsiripaiboon was attacked by men on the Bannang Sata-Than road near Kasot village.

In Muang district, Asae Sueto, 40, a member of Yupo tambon administration organisation, was shot dead in front of Nurulhuda mosque after prayers. His body was riddled with bullets fired from an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol.

Also in Yala, a soldier in a teacher-escort squad was injured by a roadside bomb in Raman district, police said.

Sgt Lawai Inthonman sustained minor leg injuries in the explosion near Ban Palukasano of tambon Jakua.

Police said the bomb was planted alongside the road about 1km from the school. It was set off by mobile phone and left a hole about 70cm wide and 5cm deep.

In Pattani, a policeman from Panare was shot by a pillion rider in the municipal market. Pol Sgt-Maj Snr Thawee Wongchan was hit in the shoulder, waist and leg and taken to Pattani hospital.

In Yarang district, Somsak Musami, 43, an employee of the district conscription office, was attacked by two motorcycle gunmen at Pawa Waseng village in tambon Yarang and seriously wounded.

In Thung Yang Daeng district, E-saw Lado, 43, an informant for police and military units in the district, was shot by motorcycle gunmen at Pase Pute village in tambon Paku and died.

In Narathiwat, Che-useng Salae, 42, a defence volunteer of Chanae district office, was badly hurt by a shotgun blast fired by the pillion rider of a motorcycle while on his way to security duty in Chanae district.

In Sungai Kolok district, a defence volunteer identified as Mana-eng Dolo, 46, was wounded in Lupo Lusong village in tambon Muno. Two assailants on a motorcycle followed him to the village and the pillion rider fired three shots at him.One bullet hit the defence volunteer in the right elbow.
