1. When giving the name of something or the translation of something, Lao requires the secondary verb wāa ວ່າ  . Used this way it means 'thus' or 'as follows'.

ອັນນີ້ເອີ້ນວ່າຍົນ	ǎn nìi ?ɔ̀ɔn wāa ñón	This is called an airplane.
"Fish"    ແປວ່າ ປາ	"fish" pεε wāa paa	"Fish" means "paa."

          Without  wāa  ວ່າ      the meanings change.

ຂ້ອຍເອີ້ນລາວ	khɔ̂y ?ɔ̀ɔn láaw	I called him.
ຂ້ອຍແປຫນັງສື	khɔ̂y pεε nǎŋ sʉ̌ʉ	I translate papers.

2. ຂອງ khɔ̌ɔŋ   means "things".   It is used to show possession.  In some cases, it can be translated "of " or "belonging to." 

For example,

ຂອງໃຜ	khɔ̌ɔŋ phǎy	whose
ຂອງຂ້ອຍ	khɔ̌ɔŋ khɔ̂y	mine
ຂອງເຈົ້າ	khɔ̌ɔŋ càw	yours
ປື້ມຂອງຂ້ອຍ	pỳm khɔ̌ɔŋ khɔ̂y	My book
ປະຕູຂອງເຮືອນ	patuu khɔ̌ɔŋ hỳan	door of the house
