Pronunciation Notes 2

    1. Here are some phrases to help you pronounce the sound "k" (ກ).  Remember, there is no puff of air as there is with "kh" (ຄ).  The sound is close to the English "g" sound, but not "voiced."

    For example,

      ມັກກາແຟ ma#k kaafe2e like coffee
      ບອກກັນ bO3Ok kan  tell each other
      ປາກເກ່ງ pa3ak ke#N speak well
      ກະດູກໄກ່ kadu3uk ka#y chicken bone
      ກະໂພກກວ້າງ kapho1ok kua1N wide hips
      ຈັກກິໂລ ca2k kiilo2o   how many kilo
      ຊອກກິນ sO1Ok kin look for something to eat

    2. When you say words ending with ເອົາ "aw" or   ອາວ "aaw" such as ເອາ "aw", ເຈົ້າ"ca1w", ຢາວ "n)aa4w", and ຍາວ "ja4aw", be sure to say the vowel "aa" and not "EE".  Listen, then repeat these pairs of words after the teacher.

      ແອ່ວເອົາ EEw aaw
      ແຖວທ້າວ thE2Ew tha2aw
      ແຂ້ວຂາວ khE3Ew kha2aw

    3. Listen and repeat these short vowel words.

      ເອົາ aw to take
      ເນົາ na#w -
      ເຂົ້າ kha3w rice
      ເວົ້າ wa1w to talk, to say

    4. Be sure to distinguish between the vowel     - ໍ    "OO" and the vowel "oo".  Both are rounded.  Listen, then repeat.

    ບອກ bO3Ok to tell
      ໂບກ bo3ok to sway a hand

      ພໍ phO#O enough
      ຮ້ອນ hO1On hot, warm
      ໂພດ pho1ot too much
      ຊອກ sO3Ok to seek, to find
      ໂສດ so3ok single
      ໂມ້ mo4o big talk

      ຂອບ khO3Op rim
      ພໍ່ phO2O father
      ບອດ bO3Ot blind
      ໂບດ bo3ot Buddhist chappel
      ລົດ lo1ot a car
      ມໍ່ mO4O near
      ລອດ lO1Ot to pass under something

    5. "w" may often sound more like an English "v" than and an English "w".  In fact, it has similarities to both.

    6. In most two-syllable words, a long vowel in the first syllable gets shortened.  Listen to the following, then repeat.  Be sure to say them at normal speed.

      ກາເຟ kaafe2e coffee
      ມັກກາເຟ ma#k kaafe2e like coffee
      ໂຄລ່າ kho2o la1a coke
      ເອົາໂຄລ່າ ?aw kho2o la1a like coke
      ອາກາດ ?aaka3at air, fresh air
      ມັກອາກາດ ma#k ?aaka3at like fresh air
      ອາຫານ ?aaha4an food
      ມັກອາຫານ ma#k ?aaha4an like food
