Tech Connect

In this section of JSEALT we include links to sites that COTSEAL members have found to be useful in their work.  We encourage you, our readers and members, to notify the editor of sites you would recommend for inclusion. You can email your Tech Connect suggestions and recommendations to jsealt@charter.net.

Images

The University of Wisconsin's Southeast Asian images & Texts (SEAiT) has two main categories of  "primary and secondary resources: research and teaching materials created by University of Wisconsin faculty and staff, and unique or valuable items related to these fields held by the University of Wisconsin Libraries."  These include many images from the Philippines, but also a unique collection of slides from Laos; these are located at http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/SEAiT/

The University of Michigan's Center for Southeast Asian Studies Outreach Program has recently put a collection of images taken in the summer of 2006 on line.  To view these images and the information abut them, go to http://www.pbase.com/rhoover/southeast_asia_2006

The University of Michigan also has a collection of photographs taken in Indonesia called "Images from Indonesia."  Teachers may find ways to incorporate them into their teaching; these photos may be viewed at  http://images.umdl.umich.edu/cgi/i/image/image-idx?c=indonesian;page=index

Language-Specific Sites

In the course of preparations for their classes, teachers have found materials at Northern Illinois's SEAsite  to be useful for many of their students.  For an example of what is available for Khmer, go to www.seasite.niu.edu/khmer

If you have used a language-specific site that you would recommend to other Southeast Asian language instructors, please mail your recommendation to the editor at jsealt@charter.net

National Language Resource Centers

There are a number of National Language Resource Centers in the United States.  Rather than just listing all of them, we are highlighting with each issue aspects of the services these centers provide which may be of particular interest to JSEALT readers.

One of the aspects of the NLRCs that can be helpful to teachers is the additional professional training opportunities that many of them provide.  For instance, the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University offers many such opportunities.  The following link will take you directly to the CLEAR Professional Development site.  http://clear.msu.edu/clear/professionaldev/

Similarly, the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota offers workshops and other development opportunities for instructors.  You may find information about these at http://www.carla.umn.edu/development.html

Finally, the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawaii provides conferences and workshops that teachers of Southeast Asian Languages may find useful.  You can find their nformation at http://www.nflrc.hawaii.edu/prodev.cfm

Southeast Asian Publications

This section includes links to online publications from and about Southeast Asia, particularly those relevant to the study of Southeast Asian languages and cultures.

The Hmong Studies Journal is "the only peer-reviewed scholarly journal in the world devoted to academic studies related to the Hmong diaspora and Hmong culture and history." HSJ has published online issues since 1996.  JSEALT readers may find many of the articles at HSJ useful in support of the teaching of Hmong language, culture, history, and literature.  Be sure to scroll down far enough into the HSJ site to find the PDF articles you would like to print.  www.hmongstudies.com/HmongStudiesJournal
