Guidelines for Contributors |
The Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching publishes articles, review articles, book reviews, multimedia reviews, bibliographies, and reports on any aspect of language teaching of general interest and on topics in Southeast Asian languages, literatures, and cultures of particular interest to teachers of these languages. This includes materials for classroom use. |
Manuscripts of articles should be sent in three hard copies to the editor of the Journal (Carol J. Compton, 3301 Westview Lane, Madison, WI 53713). All articles submitted will be blindly and anonymously refereed. Upon acceptance, the editor will also request a copy in computer-readable form. Those wishing to contribute reviews should submit two hard copies as well as a computer-readable copy. |
Hard copies should be typed double-spaced with 1 ¼ ’’ margins; Times New Roman (12 pt.) should be used for the body of the paper. Pages should not be numbered. Provide English glosses and translations for all examples from other languages. Examples in languages with a non-roman script should be given in a standard transliteration or transcription. In addition, Thai scripts can be used. Other language scripts, such as Vietnamese, may be available; check with the editor. However, if you use special fonts in your paper for languages such as Burmese, Khmer or Lao, or if you use an IPA font, please send a copy of that special font with your paper. Citations should be given in the text as ‘Author (date)’ or “(Author, date)” rather than in notes. Endnotes or footnotes may be used for other purposes. |
You may also send your article to the editor in an MS-Word document in one of the following ways: as a disk, as a cd, and/or as an email attachment to this internet address: jsealt@att.net. If you need and presently do not have an IPA font in your computer, you may download and install one for use from the SEAsite Download and Installation page. If you are considering submitting an article to JSEALT, please note that you need to be a member of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages to do so. Membership Form |

Guidelines for Multimedia Review Contributors |
The Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching publishes multimedia reviews of any of the following: CD-ROMs providing content in Southeast Asian languages, Southeast Asian language-focused websites which use two or more of the following: audio files, video files, animation or image files; language teaching books which include either an audio or video component, CD-ROM or website-based Southeast Asian language dictionaries, narrative or documentary films or karaoke videos in Southeast Asian languages on VCD or DVD. Other materials could possibly be reviewed as well; if you have something specific in mind, write to the editor at jsealt@att.net. As to the requirements for fonts and margins, see the third paragraph of the Guidelines for Contributors section above. |
The most important criterion determining whether or not a piece of multimedia is suitable for review is that it be useful for the learning or teaching of a Southeast Asian language, either for practice/self-study or for use in classroom instruction. Multimedia materials not specifically created for the purpose of language teaching or learning, including authentic materials created for the consumption of native speakers which exist solely in a Southeast Asian language with no English, may certainly be suitable for review, but the reviewer must offer specific suggestions as to how the material could be used for language learning and/or teaching. |
Manuscripts of reviews should not exceed three double-spaced pages, and pages should be numbered. Give English glosses and translations for all other language examples. Examples in languages with a non-roman script should be given in a standard transliteration or transcription. Thai and Lao Unicode scripts can be used in addition. Other language scripts, such as Vietnamese, may be available; check with the Multimedia Reviews editor. Citations should be given in the text as ‘Author (date)’ or “(Author, date)” rather than in notes. |
Send your review submission in an MS-Word document as an email attachment to jsealt@att.net. |

Guidelines for Book Review Contributors |
The Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching welcomes reviews of recent publications focusing on a variety of aspects of Southeast Asian languages and linguistics including research, professional development, classroom approaches, teaching texts and computer mediated materials. Reviewers should give a clear and concise description of the contents and provide the reader with the means of evaluating the relevance of the material to the teaching of Southeast Asian languages. Reviews should normally include references to published theory and relevant research, and reviews providing a critical/evaluative overview of publications that have made a distinct contribution to the field of Southeast Asian language research and practice are particularly welcome. Reviews are generally 1,200-1,600 words in length. As to the requirements for fonts and margins, see the third paragraph of the Guidelines for Contributors section. The following information should be included on the top left portion of the first page of the review: |
