COTSEAL President's Message |
Dear Members and Colleagues, It seems just like yesterday, even though it was almost two years ago, when I had the honor of being chosen to be the next President of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL). Recognizing that time was of the essence, Leo Paz, our Vice President, and Yuphaphann Hoonchamlong, our Secretary, and Carol Compton, editor of our electronic journal, and so many other colleagues, immediately put shoulders to the wheel and worked tirelessly for the growth of our organization. As everyone can see, we have continued to uphold our commitment to professional development as well as taking some important steps in trying to expand our membership and gaining more recognition for our contributions to the field and also to get members more involved in our various activities. Our annual conferences on Southeast Asian Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, organized by Lopao Vang and myself, have witnessed some variety in their themes and diversity in the makeup of the audiences, and this summer's conference in particular holds a great deal of appeal for both recognized and aspiring scholars. Our e-journal, the Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching, has established itself as a serious academic endeavor with many useful features – the Forum with its ever-growing PowerPoint Collection, under the supervision of Rhodalyne Gallo-Crail, being one of the latest additions. Also, we are hoping to be in a position to run a teacher training workshop at some point, if we are able to secure the assistance of language programs or Southeast Asian Centers across the nation. In many ways, I feel very fortunate to be part of COTSEAL, as the organization has given me the opportunity to meet and work with wonderful members and colleagues, who have enriched my life tenfold. After all, the health of an organization depends on the level of commitment and the contributions of its members. In this respect alone, I am deeply grateful to each and every one of us for the time and effort you have put into helping COTSEAL maintain its vital role in serving both teachers and learners of SEA languages. Thank you very much for your continued support of COTSEAL, and your dedication to the field. Best regards, Bac Hoai Tran |
