ถ้ายังมั่นอยู่ในเพศบรรพชิต
น่าจะได้เป็นถึงเจ้าคณะพระครูโน้นก็ได้
แต่อนิจจังมันไม่เที่ยงยิ่งกาลยิ่งเนิ่นานออกไปตามความศรัทธาเลื่อมใสของอุบาสกเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งอุบาสิกา
ที่มีต่อพระธรรมคำสอน มักจะเปลี่ยนไปเป็นศรัทธาต่อพระสงฆ์องค์เจ้า
เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ถ้าอุบาสิกาไม่บวชเป็นชี พระสงฆ์ก็ต้องหาเรื่องสึก
ท่านสมภารเขินก็หนีปรากฏการณ์นี้ไม่พ้น
เพราะในจำนวนอุบาสิกาที่ชอบเข้าวัดแต่ไม่ชอบฟังธรรมนั้น
มีแม่อุบาสิกาหม้ายชื่อแม่หวานอิ่มรวมอยู่ด้วย
ต่อมาไม่นานท่านสมภารก็สึกออกมาและไปอยู่บ้านของแม่หวานอิ่มดังที่คนทั้งหลายคาดไว้และรู้กันเอาเองว่าทั้งสองได้อยู่กินกันเช่นคู่สามีภรรยาตั้งแต่บัดนั้น
ทั้งสองครองสุขร่วมกันมาหลายปี
แม้ใจยังไม่อยากตายแต่โรคภัยก็ทำให้แม่หวานอิ่มตายไปจนได้
ซึ่งยังความเสียดายเสียใจให้ท่านอดีตสมภารเป็นอันมาก
ท่านเริ่มหันไปกินเหล้าแก้ทุกข์อย่างจริงจังวันแล้ววันเล่า
แต่ยิ่งกินก็ดูเหมือนยิ่งทำให้ท่านโศกเศร้าถึงภรรยามากยิ่งขึ้นหลายครั้งมีคนเห็นท่านร้องไห้โฮๆกลางตลาด |
Had he remained a monk, he might have become chief monk of the
district. But, alas, nothing is permanent. The belief of the devoted, particularly devoted
women, in Buddhist Teaching often becomes in time devotion towards a particular monk. When
this happens, if the religiously inclined woman doesn’t become a nun, the monk finds
some reason to put aside the yellow robe. Abbot Khern was no different. Among the devout
women who visited the temple, but not for listening to sermons, was a widow named Wan Im.
In not too much time, as everyone expected, the abbot left the monastery and robe and
moved in to Wan Im’s house where it was recognized that the two lived together as
husband and wife. They lived quietly for some years but then, though her heart was not
willing, Wan Im died of a disease. Extreme sorrow caused the former abbot to be
despondent. He began to go out and drink alcohol heavily, but the grief arising from his
wife’s passing away only increased. Several times people saw him weep aloud in the
middle of the marketplace. |
