Among the Gender family, the Slentem has the largest metal bars and resonators. A Slentem is approximately two and a half feet long. The largest bars is approximately 36cm long and 9.5cm wide.

The Slentem usually plays the main melody, along with the Saron instruments. Like the Saron instruments, Slentem usually has seven bars and are tuned to either Pelog system or Slendro system. However, Slentem sound one octave lower in pitch than Saron Demung.

During playing, the player uses the right hand to grip the mallet, and uses the left hand to damp the metal bar.
