Introducing the main verb ให้   “to give.”   The other 2 uses of  ให้  will appear in later lessons.

In Maanii 12,  the second meaning and grammatical function of ให้ is used.
In grammatical terms, this is called the “Causative”
  ให้  + somone doing something = to cause, have, make or let someone do something. e.g., ให้ไป   = to have, make or let someone go.                                                           

ไม่ให้ไป   =  not allow/let someone go.

Spring Week 4

Beware!  Here is where the pace picks up in this course---and the adage "In Language There Are Only Differences" comes into play in a big way.  Hie thee to the Language Lab!

Group Activity:  Listen to the story being played by the instructor 3 times.  As you are listening, write down words that are repeated.  Write down any and all new words.

Important Memo:  Week 4 Thai grammar uses word order to achieve differences in function and meaning.  This is particularly true in the case of "hay"(rhymes with "Hi") and "day" (rhymes with "Die").

You have been introduced to to  "hay" already in Lesson 11.  Now you meet "day."  By moving these words around from main verb to pre- and post-verb, the meanings and time of the action changes.

extend the use of น่า to น่าสนใจ interesting

uses of conjunctions และ and กับ

Many times they are interchangeable, but when you want to express going with someone or accompanying someone, you use กับ

Example:  เขาไปกับใคร

The following example (using vocabulary from Manii 13)  recites the story of Jack and Jill:

แจ๊กกับจิลล์ = Jack and Jill

ไปขึ้นภูเขา = climbed up the mountain

ไปเอาน้ำด้วยกัน = to look for water together

Question: ใครไป?   Answer: แจ๊กกับจิลล์

Note:  Most Thais would not use the equivalent of "I'm pleased to meet you."  They would likely just use the polite/confirmation particles: ค่ะ ครับ.

Spring Break

Welcome Back!

This second half of the semester will cover Maanii Lessons 19-24 and Spoken Thai Units 4 & 5.  Look them over now to get an overview so that you can plan your schedule and learning strategies and avoid a spring/end of semester meltdown.  There will be a heavy emphasis on family, both in Maanii and Spoken Thai.  Think ahead to talking about your family in class and during the final oral interview.  Eventually, we will bring in pictures of your family members, which can include your pets, your car, your motorcycle... whatever has a name... and talk up a storm.

Time permitting, we will also get into Thai food and ordering off a menu.  Start early to hunt down Thai food items in your grocery store.  Look up a neat recipe or just open a box of  "Taste of Thai" noodles, curry, soup, or Thai iced tea/coffee;  take a digital picture of your glorious meal, e-mail it to us for discussion purposes.  Go to: https://seasite.niu.edu/Thai/food/default.htm
