Note: A more authentic way of asking someone in face-to-face conversation "Where are you going?" is simply "pay năy khráp/khá." [literally GO + WHERE +/- POLITE PARTICLE). "pay năy" is also a common greeting - like "hi" is in English - and not a true request for information. The formal pronoun "khun" [you] is dropped, as is "kamlaŋ càʔ" [to be about to do something]. In place of the pronoun or the dropped pronoun, the speaker can substitute a kin term (e.g., "phiˆi" [elder sibling], "lung" [uncle]) or someone's name (e.g., "Somrit," "John"). Both kin terms and names can be preceded by "khun" (sometimes translated as "Mr., Ms., Mrs.) to add a touch of deference, a means of displaying etiquette linguistically. The intent of adding the admittedly inauthentic "kamlaŋ càʔ" in this conversation is to contrast it with "yàak càʔ" [to want to do something] and to show that both have modal or pre-verbal status.
