When Am snatched his plate and rose to wash it, his
two children came and sat down. But they soon surrounded him and cried, "When
are you gonna take us to see the weapons at Sanam
Luang?" Am was silent. He finished washing his hands and
dish. He raised the hem of his loincloth and wiped his mouth, face, and hands.
His children cried out a second time while Nim was cleaning up..
"Do you want me to take our children to see
weapons that kill innocent people?" he asked Nim. Nim turned and looked at him
with wonder.
"I don't want to see our children looking for entertainment from weapons. I've seen newspapers. They print
pictures of the Koreans who have been bombarded with gas shells. Those pictures
opened my eyes. Those pictures let me see the cruel terror of war with these two
eyes I got. They made me hate war. I don't wanna see any show of power that supports war. I wanna see a show of power that supports
peace."
"That's none of your business," Nim protested. "That's in the hands of the
government."
"You misunderstand. People like you and me
have misunderstood for a long time now. I know now that everything is the business
of the people. The people want peace. The people hold the power to choose
peace, and you and I should go choose war?"
"Where are you getting this stuff?"
"From that guy."
"Am, you shouldn't go around repeating things you hear like a parrot."
